Co-founder and lead programmer
Sergi always knew he would end up making games, and worked hard to get very good at it. He programmed our games, created Anima2D and then joined Unity to bring 2D animation into the engine.
The game we never made
In 2014 we wrote a one-page game idea: our logo as the hero, chased by a blender. We never built it. Twelve years later, here it is, and it tells our story on the way down.

Our story
Mandarina Games was born in Barcelona in May 2014, founded by Sergi Valls and Joaquim Virgili. This is the ride so far: the same one the game takes you down.
A handful of friends started meeting on Skype every morning at 9:30 to make games. The name could wait; the first game could not. In May 2014 it became Mandarina Games, founded in Barcelona by Sergi Valls and Joaquim Virgili.
Brazil Soccer World Championship Sliding Tackle Deathmatch (yes, that was the whole name) came out for Android on 13 June 2014, the day after the World Cup kicked off. A runner starring Noymer, Missi and Crustiano, where rivals, teammates and even fans try to steal your ball.
Our second game starred a fat cat who is proud of his flab, hunting snacks across the city rooftops to classy jazz. Twenty levels, on Android, iOS, Amazon and Facebook. Xataka Android called its art style outstanding.
Ludum Dare taught us to finish a game in a weekend: Alice Anxiety came out of Ludum Dare 30 in August 2014. For Ludum Dare 32, in April 2015, we hosted a real-world jam at the Parc Audiovisual de Catalunya in Terrassa and made Copy Gun, where a little mandarina escapes Evil Lab Inc. with a gun that clones animals. Twenty levels plus five bonus ones, and our mascot's first starring role.
After four mobile games came our first PC project: 99th, a narrative graphic adventure with branching stories and multiple endings. We prototyped it in RPG Maker so a small team could spend its time on the story, shared the demo early and answered every comment, including the one about our tilesets.
Sergi built Anima2D, a 2D skeletal animation plugin for Unity: bones, inverse kinematics, automatic weights, onion skinning. It sold on the Unity Asset Store and went on stage at Unite Europe 2016. Then came a deal with Unity: Anima2D became free for everyone in January 2017, and Sergi joined Unity to build 2D animation into the engine itself.
The blender never caught us. Skype stand-ups, runners, jam games, an adventure and an animation tool that found a home inside Unity: that is our drop of juice in the world of games.

But when life gives you mandarinas, play games.
